Medical Marijuana History in New Mexico

The state of New Mexico’s Governor Bill Richardson signed Senate Bill 523, the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act, on April 2, 2007. It became effective on July 1, 2007. To regulate the possession, use, and distribution of medical marijuana to qualifying patients, by law New Mexico’s Department of Health was required to formulate rules and regulations by October 1, 2007. These rules included the creation of state-licensed medical marijuana production facilities, making a better confidential medical marijuana system for registered patient, and state authorization for medical marijuana distribution system. The rules also state the allowable amount of marijuana for qualifying patients. New Mexico’s medical marijuana law does not allow the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit and does not protect from prosecution any licensed or registered patients visiting New Mexico from other states wherein medical marijuana is legal.
